A great little video on CRISPR

Recommended Posts

The new CRISPR-CAS technology can almost guaranteed to be regarded by future civilizations as one of the most significant, beautiful, promising, and potentially horrifying ever devised on this planet.

This is an unusually well designed vid on where the technology came from, how it works, current state of development, some of its promises, some of its dangers

It's VERY dangerous, imo. Not only can every lab in the world easily conduct these experiments, there even a couple extreme advocates that go so far as pushing for the ability to marketi do-it-yourself gene editing kits for anyone that wants to play with the DNA of anything alive. It's our right, says they.  :o

In fact, with new "gene drive" technology, left unregulated, anyone will be able to drive their tinkering into native populations of whatever and effect wide scale genetic changes. It's almost like wanting to market do-it-yourself atomic bomb kits - and for only $19.95!

Amazing shit!

Jennifer Doudna and her French research partner are almost guaranteed a Nobel. She had the original idea after studying how bacteria use CRISPR-CAS9 as an identification-friend-or-foe system that only chops up the DNA of attacking viruses (but not their own DNA) thru precise sequence matching.  Her lectures are excellent! She's all over youtube.

Molecular Biology is fascinating! Luv that science cause thru it, we get a glimpse into the machinery of life. Some mind blowing stuff - esp. when you get that first "holy fuck!!!" insight in what it takes to make something "alive",
